Destination Oman - An Overview
The Sultanate of Oman is situated in the south-east corner of the Arabian peninsula and is the third largest country in the region.
Muscat is the vibrant and capital city of Oman.
The topography is a contrast of sorts, the mountains of the north, the serene and inviting central desert and the tropical like region of Dhofar to the south.
The deserts and valleys make up for almost 82% of the country, the mountains for 15% and the coastal plains about 3%.
Of particular pride is the stunning Omani coastline stretching nearly 1700 kilometres.
To the east, lending more variance to the topography is the region of Musandam with its magnificent fjords, aptly known as the "Norway of Arabia".
The famous "Empty Quarter" covers almost a third of the Arabian peninsula between the north and the south of the country.
The oases, the salt flats, the lagoons and the riverbeds add to the fact that Oman is a one of a kind destination in the Arabian peninsula.
The doors to tourism opened as late as the mid-80's, today Oman is home to some of the world's finest hotel chains. The iconic and multiple award winning Al Bustan Palace Intercontinental Hotel is one such fine example.
Hotels, motels, resort camps, desert camps have come up even in the remotest tourist areas thus completing the infrastructure yet without embracing mass tourism.
With a stable political climate, the safety which the destination presents, modern yet preserving its ancient culture and its multifaceted activities are some of the compelling reasons that Oman is the new "must see" destination for the discerning global traveller.
